In the transformer industry, efficiency is measured in fractions of a percentage. When a transformer underperforms, the culprit is often “magnetic flux leakage”—energy that escapes the core instead of being converted.
As a manufacturer of CRGO Core Cutting Machines, we understand that the quality of your core laminations is the first line of defense against these losses.
What Causes Flux Leakage in Cores?
Flux leakage occurs when the magnetic path is disrupted. In CRGO (Cold Rolled Grain Oriented) steel, the material is specifically engineered to conduct magnetic flux in one direction. When that grain structure is compromised, the flux “leaks” out of the core. The most common causes are:- Inaccurate Cutting Angles: If laminations are not cut at the precise required angle, the grain orientation is misaligned during stacking.
- Burr-Induced Shorting: Jagged edges from poor-quality cutting blades can create conductive paths between laminations, causing eddy currents.
- Mechanical Stress: Excessive clamping pressure during the cutting process can permanently alter the magnetic properties of the steel.
